DENISE THOMAS HCW Associate - Communicable Disease Nurse Specialist-HIV/HCV

Denise Thomas has worked in the field of HIV/AIDS and Hepatology for over 15 years in Canada, Southern Africa and India.  In Canada, she worked as the first nurse in the Immunodeficiency Clinic at St. Paul's Hospital wth the BC Centre of Excellence in HIV, scaling up access to HIV and Hepatitis C treatment and care in 2003. Developed and implemented continuing education materials to support HIV/AIDS Scale Up in resource constrained and health service limited settings with physicians and nurses.  
 
She has extensive experience with quality improvement project planning, implementation and evaluation using the Plan-Do-Study-Act with: Clinton Foundation, World Health Organization, South Africa’s National Department of Health and Lesotho; HIV/AIDS Clinical Mentorship Program.  She consulted with South Africa’s National Department of Health to develop a national Nurse-Initiated and Managed ART (NIMART) program and implementation.  Designed and implemented a national “Expert Patient” program in Lesotho, employing fifty people living openly with HIV/AIDS.  She also has extensive experience in design, implementation and evaluation of health care projects with Langara College School of Nursing and Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health & Providence Health Care.  She has experience consulting with BC Indigenous health care organization with hepatitis C and polypharmacy initiatives through a community health lens.  
 
In addition, she is a research knowledge user with the Pacific AIDS Network (PAN) and the Canadian Hepatitis C Network (CanHepC).  Her work experience includes Health Canada, First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) in Health Protection working with providers in rural and remote settings.  
 
Denise is passionate about change management from an appreciative inquiry approach.  Is currently on the Executive Committee of the Canadian Association of Hepatology Nurses (CAHN) and the Board of Directors for the Canadian AIDS Treatment and Information Exchange (CATIE). She is working with Hello Cool World as an expert advisor to our many health and wellness projects and as a team member when needed. 
 
Denise holds a Masters of Health Studies from Athabasca University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and is licensed with the College of Registered Nurses of BC (CRNBC).
